I have been extremely stressed with my life lately – with university, with my professional goals, with my personal life. I was not performing as I expect myself to and I excused myself saying life is stressful right now, so once it’s all over I will do better. And then I would realize that it might not be better, this is the reality, and if I solve one of the ‘problems’ may be another one will take it’s place… This thought worries me even more and that puts me to sleep. Simply, I was just too stressed.
So when I received the notification of the TED talk titled “Kelly McGonigal: How to make stress your friend” I jumped up to watch it. I thought it was a really interesting thought and I wanted to share it with more people, so I am writing this blog. At the end of the talk she says something very interesting – “Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort.” I think it is very inspiring and I want to put it in my (almost) daily quotes log.
When asked when someone is making a lifestyle choice between a stressful job and a non-stressful job, does it matter which way they go? Is it equally wise to choose a stressful job as long as you think you can handle it? She says, “Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows…” This is the lesson I come away with from this talk… I think now I will have a different perspective to all the ‘problems’ that were adding stress to my life.
